The Sims is a hugely popular video game franchise. The latest addition to the series, Sims 4, does not disappoint. It shattered records and topped charts. It’s a fantastic game that can provide you with hours of entertainment.
To make it even better, the developers have keenly focused on post-launch support. The Sims 4 now has numerous expansion packs and add-ons that make the game even more enjoyable. These expansions add a ton of quality content. The sheer amount of expansions can seem daunting. So, what’s the best Sims 4 expansion pack? Let’s find out.
A Quick Note
Before we dive in, let’s answer a simple but important question – how do expansion packs work Sims 4?
First of all, you must have the base game installed. This can either be done digitally via Origin or via a CD copy.
Once you’ve done that and purchased an expansion pack, you will need to either insert a disk containing the expansion pack or enter the product code that came with your purchase.
All of the expansions can be used at the same time. To check if your installation was successful, select The Sims 4 in Origin, and choose the “Extra Content” option. This will show you what expansions packs you currently have installed.
Island Living is the most recent expansion for The Sims 4. It was released on June 21, 2019, for the PC and Mac, and on July 16, 2019, for consoles.
Island Living is a content-filled expansion pack with a tropical twist. It adds a lot of new objects, aspirations, part-time jobs, and features. You don’t want to miss out on the new expansion pack Sims 4.
This new expansion pack Sims 4 is centered around the ocean paradise of Sulani, a brand-new world that consists of three islands. Sulani is filled to the brim with fun new activities to experience.
Your Sims can partake in new part-time jobs, which include diving, fishing, and being a lifeguard, or explore the gorgeous new scenery.
If you’re looking for a new career, this expansion allows you to take on the role of a conservationist. Your job will be to inform the public, clean up beaches, survey land, and observe aquatic wildlife.
As you advance in this interesting new career, you will begin to notice the impact of your actions as the islands begin to bloom.
Island Living also brings us playable mermaids, which have original and innovative gameplay, as well as a wide variety of boats, which include canoes, sailboats, speedboats, and houseboats.
This expansion pack also contains a lot of new collectibles. Those that are interested in gardening can acquire coconuts, pineapples, and other exotic fruits.
Other collectible items include tropical fish, buried treasure, old underwater photos, and seashells.
One of the cooler features, which is making a return in this expansion pack is ocean swimming.
You can once more swim in the open seas, but beware. The ocean might be beautiful and meeting turtles, dolphins, and snorkeling might seem appealing, but drowning and sharks pose a constant danger.
Get Famous is the sixth expansion pack for The Sims 4. It was released on November 16, 2018, for the PC and Mac, and on February 12, 2019, for consoles.
This expansion pack brings an entirely new, glamorous dimension to The Sims 4. It features two new skills, two new careers, three new lot traits, and plenty of new NPCs to interact with.
Get Famous also adds a plethora of new gameplay mechanics and features.
The brand new world of Del Sol Valley is based on Los Angeles and Hollywood in particular. As the name of the expansion pack suggests, the main theme of the expansion is acquiring fame and celebrity status.
Del Sol Valley is full of opportunities, and there are many ways to become famous. These include, but are not limited to:
- Video Gaming
- Acquiring a high level in any career
These opportunities aren’t limited to adult Sims. Children can also become famous using the same methods, as well as enrolling in the drama club.
Children born to celebrities will have a leg-up on the competition, as they automatically have a small amount of fame.
But despite what you may have been led to believe, fame isn’t everything. You also need to pay attention to and manage your reputation. This mechanic is a representation of your public image.
Whether good or bad, it affects gameplay. Both good and bad reputation have their benefits and drawbacks.
Acquiring fame will let you unlock special fame perks. But beware – the rich and famous and prone to developing various quirks, even at random. Interacting with NPCs, whether they are other celebrities, paparazzi, or fans, can take its toll.
These new interesting gameplay mechanics, as well as the two new skills, acting and media production, make Get Famous the best expansion pack for Sims 4.
Seasons is the fifth expansion pack for The Sims 4. It was released on June 22, 2018, for the PC and Mac, and on November 13, 2018, for consoles.
Seasons might seem lacking in content when compared to other expansion packs, but that’s a simplistic way to look at things. Seasons is the first expansion not to feature a new world, but it still offers a lot of valuable content.
The focus of this expansion pack was on immersion. The addition of dynamic weather makes all of the existing worlds more lifelike.
And the weather is impactful too – everything will react naturally to changes in the weather. Once summer rolls around, Sims will automatically start wearing appropriate clothing, and the inverse also holds.
The weather patterns in each world are unique. The seasons go a long way in making the worlds feel real.
Players can now also enjoy and celebrate holidays, and even have the ability to make their own, custom-made holidays.
A new calendar feature allows you to keep track of time, check the weather forecast, remember birthdays, and schedule social events.
Seasons also brings us two new skills, flower arranging, and skating, which is a secret skill. As for careers, players can give gardening a try, and children can be enrolled in a new afterschool activity, scouting.
Seasons isn’t often mentioned when talking about the best expansion pack for Sims 4. Let’s be clear – it is a great expansion. But there might be a good explanation for why it’s often overlooked.
How much does a Sims 4 expansion pack cost? The answer is $39.99. That’s not exactly cheap. If you have to prioritize, or if you’re on a budget, it’s best to get the conventionally “meatier” expansions first.
Cats & Dogs
Cats & Dogs is the fourth expansion pack for The Sims 4. It was released on November 10, 2017, for the PC and Mac, and on July 31, 2018, for consoles.
Cats & Dogs is often overlooked in Sims 4 expansion pack reviews. This expansion pack is light-hearted and fun, a true must-have for all animal lovers.
The new gameplay features are centered around adorable animal companions, and the expansion is set against the backdrop of a beautiful new locale.
Cats & Dogs continues the series’ long tradition of pet-themed expansions packs. The great Create A Pet tool allows you to customize dogs, cats, raccoons, and foxes. You can create the perfect companion for your Sim.
The customization options are vast and in-depth. Players can choose from a variety of breeds, tailor their appearance, behavior, and traits, as well as pick out various animal clothes and accessories.
But the gameplay goes even further than that. The companionship between man and pet is faithfully simulated – the relationship that your Sim has with their pet will depend on their interactions. Pets can be trained, cared for, and played with.
Cats & Dogs also introduces Brindleton Bay, a beautiful new world for you to explore. It is based on the New England seaside. This coastal area is quaint, almost rural, and close to nature.
Players can also build a clinic and pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Pets can suffer from various afflictions, all of which are thankfully easy to cure. Players can diagnose, cure, and treat pets, as well as perform surgery in the direst cases.
Cats & Dogs is the best expansion pack for Sims 4 for pet lovers and those who enjoy the outdoors.
City Living is the third expansion pack for The Sims 4. It was released on November 1, 2016, for PC and Mac, and on November 14, 2017, for consoles.
City Living is like a much-needed blast from the past. It’s akin to a spiritual successor to many expansion packs from the earlier Sims games. It incorporates elements from previous showings such as:
- Apartment Life (The Sims 2)
- Nightlife (The Sims 2)
- Late Night (The Sims 3)
- Showtime (The Sims 3)
City Living reintroduces apartments as a gameplay feature. This type of housing is different from the usual Sims home – players will have to think about rent, staying in the good graces of their landlord, pests, and the proximity of neighbors.
Players can also build luxurious penthouses on the top of decorative buildings. If you need an even stronger dose of city life, you can visit various festivals around town. And while you’re there, why not try your hand at singing, the new skill added in City Living?
This expansion pack takes place in San Myshuno, a densely-populated, modern metropolis. The city is loosely based on San Francisco, but also draws inspiration from other bustling cities such as Tokyo or New York City. San Myshuno also features elements of Japanese, Indian, Chinese, and Moroccan cultural influences.
San Myshuno is full of new opportunities. Players can embark upon three new career choices: Politician, Critic, and Social Media.
Those who choose politics can end up as either elected officials or charity organizers. Critics can either focus on the arts, or set their sights on the culinary scene. Those who are in Social Media can endeavor to become internet personalities or public relations experts.
It’s difficult to choose what the best expansion pack for Sims 4 is, but City Living is certainly a strong contender for the title.
Get Together is the second expansion to be released for The Sims 4. It was released on December 8, 2015, for the PC and Mac, and on September 11, 2018, for consoles.
Get Together was the first expansion pack for The Sims 4 to add an entirely new world to the game. The scenic new area is called Windenburg and is based on rural Northern Europe. Windenburg is full of Gothic architecture, beautiful scenery, and social clubs.
And social life is the name of the game when it comes to this expansion. The most important new feature is clubs, which allow players to form their unique group.
You decide who gets to join, what the rules are, and you get to customize the club hangout spot. You can also decide what sort of behavior to encourage, and what to discourage.
All of this, coupled with the ability to choose club activities, allows you to interact with other Sims on a scale that has never been seen before. As your club grows in power, you will unlock new perks and benefits.
Get Together also added two new skills to the game: DJ mixing and dancing, as well as ten new radio stations. This expansion pack also features a lot of new, fun activities to try, such as:
- Pool Parties
- Bonfire Parties
If you’re not in the mood to start a club of your own, you can join an existing one, and play by someone else’s rules as you climb the social ladder.
Windenburg is a fun world to explore. You’ll love the picturesque cottages, appealing pools, old estates, ancient ruins, and incredibly beautiful nature.
No list of Sims 4 expansion pack reviews would be complete without this classic. Get Together was a huge step forward for the game. It might not be the best expansion pack for Sims 4 – but it’s pretty close.
Get to Work
Get to Work is the first expansion pack for The Sims 4. It was released on March 31, 2015, for the PC and Mac, and on March 20, 2018, for consoles.
Get to Work was a fantastic expansion and a sign of great things to come. It checks all the boxes that a good expansion should: plenty of content, expanding existing mechanics, and adding new ones.
In many ways, Get to Work set the standard for all future expansions, which they have strived to replicate.
The biggest change brought on by this expansion was arguably the new active careers. This new system allowed players to actively control their Sims in the workplace.
Active careers allowed you to take control of your work. With this mechanic, it’s up to you to decide if you’re gunning for a promotion or trying to stir up commotion and cause trouble.
These active careers are:
In each of these new careers, you have to complete a set of tasks every day to advance.
Doctors must make diagnoses, run tests, cure patients, and perform surgeries.
Scientists experiment and create inventions, while detectives gather clues, apprehend suspects, interrogate them and put them in jail.
If none of these are your cup of tea, you can start your own retail business. You decide what to sell, who to employ, and how to run your store. There are a lot of possibilities – you can open businesses such as:
- Art galleries
- Clothing shops
Players who purchase other expansion packs, such as Dine Out or Cats & Dogs, can try their hand at an even greater variety of businesses. Get to Work also features a new neighborhood, Magnolia Promenade, a secret lot called Sixam, and a brand new illness system.
